U.S. President Joe Biden plans to announce new sanctions against Russia during his meeting with NATO and European allies in Brussels this week, according to U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Tuesday.
Biden, who will take part in a special NATO meeting and speak at a European Council summit, is also expected to discuss long -term adjustments to the posture of NATO forces and contingencies in the case of the use of nuclear weapons.
In addition, he is also said to be announcing ‘joint action’ to increase energy support in Europe which is heavily dependent on imports of crude oil and gas from Russia.
The United States and its allies have imposed massive sanctions on the Russian economy as punishment for invading Ukraine and also supplied billions of dollars of weapons as well as aid for Kiev's defense.
While not sending his troops to Ukraine, Biden vowed to maintain the country’s commitment in defending NATO members if they are attacked.
Biden will leave on Wednesday for Brussels, where NATO and the European Union (EU) are based. The EU also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to speak at the summit.
