‘Take off the electric car, make a rocket. Now I want to create my own social media. '
Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk said he was already thinking of building his own social media platform.
Through a tweet on his personal Twitter, the world’s richest man is considering building a social media platform that consists of open source algorithms and prioritizes freedom of speech that allows propaganda to be highlighted to a minimum.
The tweet was made by Musk a day after he conducted an opinion poll on Twitter and asked users if they believed Twitter adhered to the principle of freedom of speech.
The results of the survey by Musk saw 70% of users vote 'no'.
It is common knowledge that Musk is a hardcore Twitter user, yet he has criticized the policies set by some social media platforms by saying the policies undermine democracy as well as fail to adhere to the principles of freedom of speech.
In the meantime, if Musk really creates a new social media platform, it means he will join a growing portfolio of technology companies as well as position himself as a leader in freedom of expression over existing platforms such as Twitter, Facebook owned by Meta Platfrom Inc and YouTube owned Google Alphabet.
For the record, this is not the first time a well -known individual has wanted to create his own platform for personal gain.
Former United States (US) President Donald Trump once launched his own Truth Social App after he was banned from using the world’s leading social media apps such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
However, new apps and platforms such as competitors Twitter, Gettr and Parler as well as Rumble are seen failing to match the reach and popularity of mainstream platforms so far.
