Unlike its neighbor, El Salvador, Honduras does not recognize Bitcoin (BTC) as a legal currency.

The statement was officially announced via the Twitter account of the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) last night.

"For now, Bitcoin in this country is not yet legal."

At the same time, the BCH statement ended the rumors claiming that the country would make BTC a legal tender, just like El Salvador did.

Not sure where it started, Honduran president Xiomara Castro reportedly wanted to recognize the BTC as the official currency as did El Salvador president Nayib Bukele last year.

However, the response from the central bank last night confirmed that the lempira still remains the main currency. (1 lempira = 0.17 sen).

In fact, the statement also referred to the BCH's stance which earlier insisted that there was no supervision or guarantee on operations carried out with cryptocurrencies, including payments in the territory.

In any case, BCH remains excited to explore and study the central bank's digital currency (CBDC) issuance requirements which have the potential to be nominated as a legal tender in the country.
