The number of women investors in Malaysia is reported to be increasing with 36% of Central Depository System (CDS) account holders being women.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia Bhd, Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift in 2020 as many as 32% of CDS account holders were women and the number increased to 34% the following year.
He added that women investors made up 30% of the total value of trade in 2021 and the volume of trade by women jumped 194.1% between 2018 and 2021.
He added that a study by Fidelity Investments showed that female investors achieved positive returns, outpacing male investors by 0.4% on average in terms of annual performance between January and December 2021.
However, she thinks there is still room for growth, and much needs to be done to further encourage the participation of women investors in the industry.
Therefore, Bursa Malaysia has launched the #MyFirstTrade campaign which runs from Tuesday to 31 March exclusively for women investors who have positive stories to share and within that period.
Participating exchanges as well as brokers will contribute their respective shares of the opening fees for the first 4,000 CDS accounts opened by women.
