Chinese President Xi Jinping told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron that the country was ready to cooperate as a mediator in the Ukraine-Russia war.
Speaking in a virtual call on Tuesday, Xi also said the situation in Ukraine was worrying and China was deeply saddened by the outbreak of war in continental Europe.
In a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, he said Beijing would remain in communication and coordination with France, Germany and the European Union (EU) as well as actively cooperate with the international community.
Moreover, he also added that all efforts conducive to a peaceful solution in the crisis must be supported.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Scholz and Macron said the two countries were ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Beijing to promote peace talks.
It is common knowledge that China and Russia share a strategic interest in challenging Western countries, but the Ukrainian aggression has tested their friendship.
Beijing did not directly condemn the Russian attack or impose sanctions on Moscow but it also did not rush to help Russia after the economy was hit by sanctions from around the world.
This is because, analysts say the options Beijing has are limited, claiming that Chinese financial institutions and companies are actually afraid of second sanctions if they deal with Russia.
