British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a vote of confidence held by his own party on Monday.
The vote was sparked amid public outrage after he and other officials held a party at his office and residence on Downing Street when the country was under curfew to deal with Covid-19.
He managed to retain his position as UK leader and party leader after winning 59% of the vote, with 211 votes in his favor while another 148 against.
Despite winning this vote, however, this vote also dealt a huge blow to him as 41% of his MPs opposed his leadership after months of controversy that raised questions over his credibility to govern the UK.
Following the vote, PM Johnson described it as a ‘decisive decision’, meaning that “as a government we can go ahead and focus on things that are very important to the people”.
Before the vote began, the prime minister had told policymakers that he would cut taxes if he could retain his post.
He is also said to be outlining programs to boost economic growth next week along with Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.
