Belgium's energy minister has warned that European Union countries will face a 'terrible' winter if gas prices continue to soar.
Calls to cap energy and electricity prices across the EU are growing as the bloc grapples with dwindling gas supplies after Russia curbs its exports.
In a tweet sent on Sunday, Tinne Van der Straeten said gas prices in Europe should be frozen immediately.
He added that the next five to 10 winters will be a terrible situation if they continue to remain silent. Therefore, it needs to act on every level from the source to the whole of Europe.
Electricity prices have also soared in Europe where they have reached record highs this week. Gas is the main source of electricity generation.
Separately, the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer also urged that the 'madness' occurring in the energy market be stopped by calling on the EU to reduce electricity and gas prices.
The biggest importer of Russian gas, Germany is trying to fill its gas capacity to 85% by October to face the winter.
