Britain's energy regulator announced on Friday that the annual energy price cap in the UK will rise to £3,549 (RM18,700) from October 1.

The Office of Gas and Electricity (Ofgem), said this means that England, Wales and Scotland who use the usual amount of energy have to bear the cost of £300 (RM1,580) every month.

The current annual bill is £1,971 (RM10,387) per year. New forecasts suggest it could peak at more than £6,000 (RM31,600) a year next year.

Ofgem's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jonathan Brearley admitted that the increase would devastate many families.

He also blamed Russia's invasion of Ukraine for the difficulties suffered by UK households, businesses and the economy.

He added that the new prime minister who will be elected on September 5 needs to act immediately to deal with the effects of the upcoming price increase.

So far the government has promised a £15 billion support package for households, including two payments totaling £650 to eight million low-income households in benefits and a £400 grant for all households.

Whoever becomes the prime minister of the UK, Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak will certainly face a big challenge to deal with the energy crisis that is increasingly pressing the people in the country.
