A series of geopolitical crises that occurred this year, the United Nations (UN) issued a warning that the arms race based on nuclear power is seen to be accelerating.

This issue was highlighted by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres who underlined that the governments of the world are seen spending hundreds of billions of dollars in upgrading their nuclear weapons stockpile.

According to an official UN statement entitled 'My Message from Hiroshima', so far there are almost 13,000 nuclear weapons in storage around the world.

In general, there were a series of geopolitical crises that occurred this year that spread the news of nuclear weapons empowerment around the world.

Starting with the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the news on the Korean peninsula, the lingering issues in the Middle East and the visit of the United States (US) speaker who is stubborn to go to Taiwan despite receiving stern warnings from China.

Therefore, Guterres did not rule out the possibility that if there was one mistake or one misunderstanding or one miscalculation alone it would be enough for the world to start a large-scale war.

For that reason he advised world leaders to 'stop knocking on the door of doomsday' and ignore nuclear as a weapon of choice.

He also insisted that countries with nuclear power commit not to use nuclear weapons as the 'first' option in the event of a crisis.

In addition, the UN is seen as suggesting that each country open a space for dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation in discussing a crisis instead of relying on the power of deadly weapons of destruction.
