'Perghhh, Putin keeps showing his veto power. Really take advantage of the phase when we buy rice.'
The global food crisis received a new blow when Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would limit Ukraine's grain exports to the West.
The news broke after Putin was understood to be amending the grain agreement with Ukraine to prevent Western countries from obtaining the foodstuff.
This is because according to the original agreement made in July, the exports were supposed to help reduce food price spikes in developing countries, but only rich Western countries were seen to receive the benefits.
Please be informed that when the agreement was signed, Turkey and the United Nations (UN) acted as mediators.
Putin explained at an economic forum on Wednesday, shutting down Turkey's function as an intermediary country for exported grain would allow poor countries to continue receiving food resources.
He also described the Western countries, which he said exploit resources, will increase the scale of the world's food problem and bring about an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
He added that Russia is doing everything it can to ensure that Ukraine can export its grain, but the global food market problem and the humanitarian disaster make that effort difficult.
So far 2 out of 87 ships carrying 60,000 tons of grain have already left for poor countries.
In addition, updated sources said talks between Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan about the grain export agreement have reached an impasse with the West not fulfilling its obligations.
