US President Joe Biden has confirmed his plans to meet face-to-face with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 Bali summit next week.
This will be their first personal meeting since Biden assumed the presidency in 2020, as it was prevented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Biden said he would discuss trade and Taiwan issues at the meeting, where tensions between the two countries have risen since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in August.
Even so, Biden insisted that no 'concessions' would be made following the meeting, but wanted to know Xi Jinping's 'limits' in their relationship.
He told reporters that his goal was to gain a deeper understanding of Xi Jinping's priorities and concerns.
"I have told them that I am looking for competition, not conflict", explained the President.
Meanwhile on behalf of Xi Jinping, he has previously said his willingness to cooperate with the US while senior diplomats of both sides have held calls and meetings in person.
