'It's hard to do it yourself, Jeff Bezos should be called a successful entrepreneur.'
Unwilling to wait long for the endless chip supply issue to be resolved, Amazon.com took its own approach by using company-invented processing.
The acquisition of chip maker Annapura Labs in 2015 appears to be paying off with the launch of a new high-powered chip, the Graviton on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing service.
According to Amazon's vice president of engineering, Peter DeSantis, Graviton is designed for high-powered computing to support tasks such as weather forecasting and genetic sequencing.
It is also designed specifically for AWS that requires high-powered hardware for generating and populating the company's large data centers.
Amazon said in its statement that its self-developed chips can provide customers with more cost-effective computing power than renting processors built by other companies such as Intel, Nvidia or AMD.
The launch also adds Amazon as a competitor to other chip companies, with DeSantis saying AWS plans to offer the high-powered chips for other companies to use.
Previously, most semiconductor components were provided by Intel, Nvidia or AMD with Amazon offering technology services as one of their customers.
However, with the launch of the Graviton chip, which has twice the ability to control high-powered computers, it will change the paradigm of the technology industry when there is an issue with China's supply chain and import restrictions by President Joe Biden.
As of this writing Amazon shares are trading 1.63% lower at $92.42.
