Code Red! Beijing Is Critical

The new wave of Covid-19 that hit Beijing put the authorities at the most critical and difficult level to fight it.

This is the fact that the deputy director of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Beijing, Liu Xiaofeng had to admit in a press conference that took place on Monday to state the current situation facing the city at this point.

As a result, he also urged the people to 'sit at home' and protect family members who are susceptible to the epidemic.

The alarm was sounded after three deaths were reported in the Chinese capital since Saturday, in addition to seeing the daily number of cases continue to increase.

According to the National Health Commission, Beijing reported more than 2,400 cases from Friday to 3pm Monday, with more than 500 infections identified outside the quarantine zone through community testing.

Liu Xiaofeng claims that the Omicron BF.7 variant is the main cause of this outbreak which has mostly affected the districts of Chaoyang, Changping, Haidian, Fengtai and Tongzhou.

Chaoyang District became a priority area for the authorities where control measures were strictly implemented due to the risk of contagion in the community.

Last week, China announced that it would ease some of its Covid-19 control measures, but new outbreaks in major cities have slowed those efforts.
