The city of Zhengzhou, home to the largest iPhone factory, Foxconn, will lift restrictions following protests that rocked China over the weekend.

The change came into effect today (November 30), according to a local government announcement posted on WeChat.

According to the announcement, no new infections were recorded for five consecutive days and the city's status was reduced to a low-risk zone.

Business activities are allowed to operate again, but residents still need to continue to follow existing health protocols.

The announcement came hours after Chinese officials said they would avoid strict restrictions after protests erupted in cities across the country against the zero-covid-19 policy.

The shutdown in Zhengzhou comes amid a surge in the Omicron variant that has put workers at the iPhone maker on lockdown.

Unable to withstand the strict control measures, it caused hundreds of workers to go on a rampage and flee the factory.

The protest is seen to have an impact on Apple's iPhone production, where it may cause a shortfall in production of nearly six million iPhone Pros this year.
