Top US officials have allegedly held secret talks with Russia over its war in Ukraine.
This surprising news comes from the Wall Sreet Journal which reports that the discussion aims to reduce the risk of war from the outbreak of a nuclear conflict.
It is understood that the negotiations involved US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan with Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev over the past few months.
However, Sullivan reportedly only discussed ways to control the risk of a nuclear escalation in the war in Ukraine, but did not involve any negotiations on ending the conflict.
Meanwhile, in the latest report by the BBC on Tuesday, Jake Sullivan confirmed the matter by saying that the lines of communication between Washington and Moscow remain open despite the war in Ukraine.
He said it was in the US interest to maintain relations with Moscow, but Sullivan insisted that officials be careful who they deal with.
Earlier, it was reported that senior US officials urged Ukraine to open the door to negotiations with Russia.
Does this mean the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to get back together?
