The United States announced sanctions on dozens of companies, mostly from China, for allegedly using advanced technology in military development.
The US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security confirmed the matter in an announcement that the 36 entities will be subject to strict license requirements.
It would block those companies' access to American-made commodities, software and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing.
The latest move comes more than two months after the Biden administration imposed new restrictions on China's access to semiconductors.
One of the companies listed in the sanctions is major chip maker China Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC).
According to the undersecretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, Alan Estevez said such actions would protect US national security by reducing Beijing's ability to take advantage of advanced technology in modernizing the military.
Not only that, but the blacklist also targets Russian-related entities that support the country's military invasion of Ukraine.
