The United States Department of Defense (US) The Pentagon has reportedly offered a cloud computing contract worth $9 billion to four US giants, namely Google, Amazon Web Services Inc, Microsoft Corp and Oracle Corp.

Before going deeper, the Pentagon is the US Department of Defense (DOD) headquarters building that was built during World War II as one of the symbols of the country's military.

Returning to the explanation, the companies have been offered to join under a project by the Pentagon called Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) to further develop existing cloud computing technology.

Therefore, the companies involved will share contract offers with a total amount of $9 billion that will allow them to further improve cloud computing services.

Why not offer the contract to just one company?

This is because the growing amount of user data has led to dependence on more than one cloud service due to the increased information load.

The addition of more cloud computing services has the potential to create stronger services against any future threats.

Earlier in 2019, the Pentagon had made a similar move by offering the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) to Microsoft, but the plan failed when Donald Trump allegedly interfered in the contract awarding process.

Due to the following issues, the Pentagon has shifted bids to Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle last year to power the cloud requirements, but the General Services Administration stated that only Amazon and Microsoft could meet the Pentagon's requirements.

Overall, the purpose of the JWCC contract is for the Pentagon to be able to provide global cloud services that have a security domain and meet its classification level.
