The coal import ban was lifted

Demand increased as the reopening began

More Chinese firms will be given permission

China's reopening is also prompting a gradual resumption of Australian coal imports due to the growing need for energy supplies.

Chinese utilities and steelmakers will now have access to better quality coal, while Australia could regain some of its market lost to suppliers including Russia and Mongolia.

Beijing's state planners this week allowed three central government-backed utilities and its leading steelmaker to resume coal imports from Canberra.

Among them, China Energy Investment Corp has placed an order to import Australian coal which can be delivered later this month.

In the meantime, the market now expects more firms to be given permission to buy it in the coming months.

This indirectly restores confidence in a better economic recovery for both countries that were previously affected by each other's sanctions.

For context, President Xi Jinping's administration imposed restrictions on the import of coal and several other Australian products after the country joined the United States in calling for an investigation into the origins of Covid-19 to be carried out in 2020.

China, is Australia's largest importer and the news of the resumption of imports is good news for Canberra.
