Although it has been repeatedly offered to be given a vaccine by the United States, but China continues to refuse it.

Concerned with the rise of the new variant and China's economy, the Biden administration offered the mRNA vaccine and other assistance through private channels.

US officials also suggested an indirect way to supply the vaccine in an effort to avoid touching on the country's sensitivity in receiving foreign aid.

This includes during a visit by senior US diplomats to China in December as well as through health officials and intermediaries.

Even so, Beijing has repeatedly said it has enough vaccines and is unclear about mRNA's effectiveness in combating the growing Omicron variant.

However, the country faces problems persuading its elderly population, who are more vulnerable to infection, to get vaccinated.

According to the data released, only about two-thirds of individuals aged 80 and over were fully vaccinated as of November.
