Donald Trump made history as the first former president of the United States to be indicted in a criminal case.
A grand jury has voted to indict Trump following an investigation into a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels to cover up allegations of an affair ahead of the 2016 election.
Even so, Donald Trump did not acknowledge the wrongdoing and denounced the decision as "political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history".
However, the former president is expected to fly to New York on Monday and appear in court on Tuesday.
The charges stem from an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Alvin Brag, into his alleged role in the 'hush money' and undercover payments involving Stormy Daniels.
The decision turned out to have caused shock not only throughout the country, but also the world since he was the first former US president to be indicted.
Trump is also under investigation in a number of other cases including the US Capitol riots in January 2021, his efforts to overturn his loss in Georgia in the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents after leaving office.
