Rubbish Investment? The President of El Salvador Urged to Give BTC to the Poor!

"Maybe Bukele needs to balance things out, don't just buy BTC until you forget the poor people."

An economist and professor at the UCA University of El Salvador, Rafael Lumus told President Nayib Bukele to help the poor in El Salvador through his purchase of Bitcoin (BTC) which until now has not benefited the country.

In context, President Bukele who became the leader of El Salvador in 2019 has made the small Central American country a BTC legal tender in 2021 and acted to buy a number of cryptocurrencies a long time ago.

However, Lumus suggested to Bukele to take the profit obtained from the BTC investment and allocate some help to the poor to reduce the burden they have to bear due to inflation.

This is because El Salvador is one of the poorest countries in the Americas and the country also recorded a very high homicide rate, but eventually managed to decrease dramatically under Bukele's watch.

Although Bukele is very popular in El Salvador and Latin America, the president's actions of spending more than $113 million to buy BTC have been criticized by various parties.

Among them are the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who criticized Bukele's idea, saying that not many El Salvadorans use crypto for everyday purchases.

It is already known that El Salvador encourages businesses and citizens to use BTC, but not many businesses other than major companies such as McDonalds or Starbucks are interested in the digital asset.
