A large dam and hydro-electric plant in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine collapsed on Tuesday, with both sides blaming each other for the destruction.

This has raised concerns about safety, water supply and the largest nuclear power plant in Europe that receives cooling water from the dam.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the attack on the Nova Kakhovka dam as Europe's biggest man-made environmental disaster in decades.

Russia, meanwhile, has denied the allegations and said Kyiv deliberately sabotaged the dam to divert attention from its counterattack.

Following the incident, thousands of residents were evacuated by security forces with at least 80 towns and villages at risk of flooding.

Oleksiy Kuleba, the deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, said the destruction of the dam would cause major problems and an ecological disaster.

The dam at Nova Kakhovka is very important because it supplies the water needs of farmers and residents as well as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as well as an important channel that brings water to Russian-occupied Crimea.
