Average Malaysians expressed their views in the form of complaints when the government announced the end of subsidies and price controls on chicken starting November 1, this Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the subsidy for grade A, B, and C chicken eggs will continue using the existing mechanism.

The statement was delivered by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu in a media conference held at the Menara Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladahan (LPP) this morning.

Commenting on Mohamad Sabu, the rationale for ending the chicken subsidy is to reduce subsidy leakage which is currently also enjoyed by foreigners and high income groups.

The measures taken have taken into account the latest situation and current trends in supply as well as farm prices and chicken production costs that have started to stabilize, which contributed to the current market price being below the ceiling price.

Following the announcement of the end of the chicken subsidy, the government will ensure that the selling price of the floated chicken will remain at a reasonable level.
