Bursa Malaysia rose on Thursday driven by optimistic sentiment following the results of Nvidia's first quarter earnings report and tariffs on Chinese goods by the United States.


At exactly 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia (FBM KLCI) rose 3.88 points to 1,625.97 from 1,622.09 at Tuesday's close.


Bursa Malaysia Bhd and its subsidiaries are closed in conjunction with the Wesak public holiday on Wednesday.


The barometer index opened 1.42 points lower at 1,620.66.


In the broader market, gainers outnumbered losers by 273 to 189. Meanwhile, 358 counters were unchanged, 1,569 were untraded and 10 others were suspended.


The trading volume was 288.40 million units of shares worth RM137.15 million.



According to Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd, the high increase in Nvidia shares in the United States and the US tariffs on China should provide better buying support in the stock market especially in the technology and electronics manufacturing services sector.


Meanwhile, overall market sentiment in the US turned negative after the minutes of the Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting showed that inflationary pressure remained constant and the market set the possibility for the Fed to maintain its hawkish stance in the near term.


In the local market, heavyweights Maybank rose one sen to RM10.00, Tenaga Nasional rose eight sen to RM12.86, CIMB strengthened six sen to RM6.90, Public Bank was unchanged at RM4.19 and Petronas Chemicals fell two sen to RM7. .01 .


As for active shares, Ingenieur and Malayan United were unchanged at seven sen and six sen respectively, AHB Holdings dropped half a sen to 17.5 sen, Sin-Kung dropped one sen to 14 sen and JCY International rose 2.5 sen to 41.5 sen.


On the index board, the FBM EMAS index expanded 34.64 points to 12,392.48, the FBMT 100 index expanded 34.28 points to 11,985.53, the FBM 70 FM index increased 25.33 points to 12,615.54.


In terms of sectors, the Financial Services Index increased by 53.74 points to 17,746.81, the Plantation Index increased by 10.28 points to 7,300.95 and the Energy Index increased slightly by 0.43 points to 994.22.


However, the Industrial Products and Services Index decreased by 0.17 points to 196.50.
