The United States Department of Justice announced the withdrawal of rights on Low Taek Jho or better known as Jho Low regarding his role in 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) which is about the corruption and embezzlement scandal.
The sentencing decision was set after US District Judge Dale Fischer in Los Angeles approved the plea deal for Jho Low's family members on Monday.
The forfeited assets are in addition to nearly US$1 billion (RM4.19 billion) including a 'superyacht' worth US$120 million (RM503 million) as previously reported.
For now, Jho Low is still facing charges of money laundering and corruption conspiracy in Brooklyn, New York regarding the 1MDB issue.
The US and Malaysian authorities in their statement said more than $4.5 billion (RM18.86 billion) was looted from 1MDB from 2009 to 2015. A sum of money was sent to offshore bank accounts and companies linked to Jho Low.
Jho Low previously helped the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak establish 1MDB to promote economic development.
Goldman Sachs also helped 1MDB sell bonds in reaching a US$2.9 billion (RM12.16 billion) settlement in 2020 for liability in US criminal cases related to 1MDB.
Jho Low's lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.
The businessman and his family were also ordered to hand over assets worth US$67 million (RM280.47 million) including properties and bank accounts in Hong Kong, Singapore and Switzerland.
The Department of Justice said it helped return more than US$1.5 billion (RM6.28 billion) related to 1MDB to Malaysia in the largest civil asset surrender case in history.
