The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim when interviewed by the international media said that Malaysia is preparing to join the BRICS group as a rapidly developing country.
The BRICS group of countries was founded as a result of the initial merger of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
In 2023, the group is seen to grow its members significantly to overcome European economic dominance. Among the newly involved countries are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the UAE.
Now, more than 40 countries are interested in joining the group.
He also said that the Malaysian government has made a decision and put in place an official procedure soon. Just waiting for the final decision from the South African government.
His statement was made during a three-day visit by Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang to celebrate the 50th year of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China.
Malaysia and China are expected to sign several agreements during Li's visit including renewing a five-year trade and economic cooperation agreement.
However, Malaysia, which is a small country, will reap various benefits, especially in improving the economy and the trade industry.
The increase of BRICS members involving the world's economic giants is able to increase trade with each other and attract investment from allies. This can reduce dependence on Western countries.
In addition, Malaysia will be given great influence at the global level to express its voice and views in the economic forum of international organizations.
