US Announces Rafah Ceasefire Without Israel's Consent, What Happened?

Recently, President Joe Biden publicly announced a cease-fire on Gaza as a result of the 'support' of Israel and the United States (US) to the leadership of Hamas.

The announcement was made without the approval of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The unilateral decision is a common move by the US for its close allies.

The scenario is a strong warning for Israel to immediately withdraw from the Rafah area and ask Hamas to release all the hostages.

Senior US officials said the White House administration did not seek permission from Israel to make the proposal public. They only informed about the speech about the situation in Gaza and did not explain in detail.

For months, negotiating countries such as Egypt and Qatar have had difficulty negotiating to ease the conflict that has killed tens of thousands of victims in Gaza.

The announced proposal calls for a six-week ceasefire. During that period, the Israeli army had to withdraw from the Gaza area and some Hamas hostages had to be released.

The talks build on an agreement Hamas accepted earlier this year to maintain a cease-fire and a long-term cessation of hostilities.

According to Jeremi Suri, a University of Texas Professor, Biden deliberately boxed Netanyahu into accepting the ceasefire proposal.

However, Israeli officials say no one can stop Israel from destroying Hamas. The notion that pressure will cause Israel to act against its national interests is a mistake.
