Malaysia's Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) has prevented 635 company directors from leaving the country following failure to pay employee contributions between January and June 2024.
This action is in line with Section 39 of the EPF Act 1991, which emphasizes the government's commitment to enforce employee welfare and legal obligations.
As of June, a total of 13,820 employers equivalent to 2.02% of the 685,399 registered employers did not make the required contribution.
As a result, 12,787 directors were banned from leaving Malaysia for the same offence.
The EPF has filed 1,932 civil suits and initiated 2,200 criminal cases against defaulting employers in the first half of this year.
EPF Chief Operating Officer, Sazaliza Zainuddin stressed that non-compliance with EPF contributions is a serious violation.
EPF is ready to take civil and criminal action to protect workers' rights.
The organization also urged members to monitor their accounts through the EPF i-Akaun application and report discrepancies immediately.
