Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, is set to introduce a new artificial intelligence (AI) chip, the Ascend 910C, which could potentially rival Nvidia's H100.
This development takes place in the middle of the United States (US) sanctions aimed at restricting Huawei's technological progress.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Huawei has informed potential customers that the Ascend 910C will be comparable to Nvidia's H100, with shipping expected as early as October 2024.
The US imposed sanctions on Nvidia in 2022 to prevent sales of AI chips such as the H100 to China, citing national security concerns.
Despite the restrictions, Huawei has reportedly made significant progress in the production of its AI chips, with companies such as ByteDance, Baidu, and China Mobile already testing the Ascend 910C.
However, Huawei faces production delays and the possibility of further US sanctions that could prevent its access to key components.
Despite these challenges, Huawei continues to resist US efforts to limit its access to cutting-edge technology, as seen in its Mate 60 Pro smartphone, which features a chip that supports 5G despite the restrictions.
