Plans to expand Tesla's electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Malaysia have been clouded by reports that Elon Musk's company has halted its EV manufacturing plans in Thailand.
A Thai newspaper reported that Tesla is currently only focusing on developing its charging infrastructure, with factory plans suspended globally, except in China, the US and Germany.
This has cast doubt on Tesla's other projects in Southeast Asia, including in Malaysia and Indonesia.
An anonymous source from the Thai government cited the termination of Tesla's executive team that visited Thailand last year as the reason for the shift in focus.
Despite these developments, Tesla continues its operations in Malaysia, having opened its headquarters in Cyberjaya, Selangor, late last year.
Additionally, Malaysia's Ministry of International Trade and Industry announced in March that Tesla will introduce at least 50 EV charging stations nationwide, along with its service centers, experience centers and Supercharger network.
Tesla had previously halted plans for a mega-factory in Mexico due to economic concerns and the potential impact of tariffs proposed by then-US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
This broader strategic shift highlights the company's evolving approach to its international operations and market priorities.
