From January 2025, AirAsia will add a required fee to ticket prices to help reduce carbon emissions from flights.
This fee will apply to all AirAsia flights, not only in Malaysia but also in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia.
The airline wants to help reduce the environmental impact of air travel by ensuring that every passenger contributes.
Unlike Malaysia Airlines, which allows passengers to decide whether to pay the same carbon fee, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said it would not be an option because people would be less likely to pay if given the choice.
The money raised will be used for projects that help reduce carbon emissions in the ASEAN region.
Fernandes also emphasized the need to inform the public about why this fee is important and how it will be used.
