The Malaysian government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety (KPKM) is considering ending the subsidy for grade A, B and C chicken eggs.
This proposal, as mentioned by KPKM Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, can save the country RM100 million every month.
These funds can then be reallocated to boost other critical sectors in the agro-food industry.
The proposal has already been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.
The government had previously stopped subsidies for chicken on November 1, 2023.
Despite initial concerns about potential price spikes, the market stabilized and prices did not rise as expected.
The country can save RM100 million a month after this decision.
More than RM3 billion has been spent since February 2022 on chicken and egg subsidies, prompting the government to rethink the sustainability of these measures.
