The Malaysian government has launched the "War on Sugar" initiative, an aggressive campaign to address the problem of excessive sugar consumption among the people.

The move comes in the wake of a sharp increase in cases of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease linked to unhealthy lifestyles, including excessive sugar intake.

The Malaysian government has announced an increase in the excise duty rate on sugary drinks by 40 cents per liter as an additional measure.

With this increase in excise duty, the government hopes to achieve the long-term goal of reducing the burden of sugar-related diseases among Malaysians, as well as strengthening efforts to promote public health.
