At the 16th BRICS summit, Turkiye submitted an application to become an associate member of the group but no official statement of the news was made during the last press conference on the second day.
Sinan Ãœlgen, Turkish foreign policy expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (US) think tank emphasized that there is no vote on Turkey's accession to BRICS.
He said, India blocked Turkey's entry into BRICS supposedly due to good relations with Pakistan, which is India's rival.
Ãœlgen explained that there are several reasons behind ErdoÄŸan's desire to join BRICS.
First, it is about strengthening strategic autonomy through this platform. In addition, Turkiye may want to express its disappointment with the EU's stance on their membership and the modernization of the EU customs union.
Political prestige is another motive for ErdoÄŸan. The president wants to show that he can sit at both the NATO and BRICS tables at the same time.
However, the actions of the country's administration thought they were capable of being a 'mediator' for both blocs but ended up as a country isolated by foreign policy.
