This year, the government allocated RM601 million in monthly financial assistance to the elderly, with an additional RM116 million earmarked for chronically bedridden patients to encourage home care by their families.
Between January and August, 151,000 senior citizens and 29,000 homeless individuals benefited from this assistance.
According to Nancy Shukry, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, 2,300 volunteers have been actively involved in helping more than 6,000 elderly people who live alone.
The Department of Social Welfare has provided a place for the elderly who cannot take care of themselves and have no family to take care of them.
The place known as Rumah Seri Kenangan offers various support services to the elderly to ensure their well-being.
