Automotive company Toyota Motor and telecommunications company Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) are now preparing to lead a revolution in the automotive industry through a major $3.3 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) technology for self-driving.

According to a Nikkei report on Monday, this collaboration aims to accelerate the development of advanced software capable of predicting accidents and automatically taking over control of vehicles to prevent such incidents from occurring.

Expected to be fully operational by 2028, this technology will not only be used by Toyota but will also be licensed to other vehicle manufacturers.

The idea came at a strategic time, when Japanese automotive companies are competing fiercely to challenge the dominance of Tesla and Chinese companies in the self-driving sector.

Toyota, which has already started incorporating hands-free driving technology in the Mirai model since 2021, sees this collaboration as a golden opportunity to further strengthen its collaboration with NTT, starting with 5G technology in 2017 and the smart city project in 2020.

This investment signifies Toyota and NTT's mission to continue to lead innovation, thereby strengthening Japan's influence in global technology.
