A total of 189,580 PTPTN borrowers who have not repaid their loans are recipients of the Sumbang Tanai Rahmah (STR) assistance.
This involves 45.7% of the 415,109 borrowers who defaulted on their loans as of August 31.
Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, revealed that the remaining 225,529 borrowers are not STR recipients.
He explained that PTPTN only holds data from loan applications, where many borrowers are reported to have no fixed income.
This statement arose following inquiries about borrowers who earn more than RM3,000 but still fail to repay their loans, raising serious questions about financial responsibility among able-bodied borrowers.
