The United States (US) medical device company, Dexcom Inc, has now opened its first overseas manufacturing plant in Batu Kawan, Penang, with an investment of RM2.8 billion expected to create more than 3,000 job opportunities.
Known for its advanced glucose monitoring technology for people with diabetes, Dexcom's presence cements Penang's reputation as a leading medtech hub in Southeast Asia.
The Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, stated that this move strengthens local employment opportunities and Malaysia's position in the high-tech manufacturing sector.
According to him, Penang's strong infrastructure and supportive ecosystem have long attracted global investors and this new factory is expected to further enhance the state's status as a center for innovation and high quality technology manufacturing.
Penang, which has built a reputation as a successful industrial center for over 50 years, now accounts for almost half of Malaysia's investment in the scientific and measurement equipment sector.
In September, the state also topped the country's exports by contributing RM46.5 billion, further cementing its status as the "Silicon Valley of the East."
