Lebuhraya Pantai Timur 3 (LPT3) is expected to cost RM9.8 billion, a sharp increase from the RM2.8 billion estimate made in 2009.

This highway will connect Kampung Gemuroh in Kuala Terengganu to Kampung Tunjong in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Deputy Minister of Public Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan explained that the increase was linked to the toll-based financing model chosen for this project.

Unlike the previous phases, LPT1 and LPT2, which were fully funded by federal government funds, LPT3 will rely on toll collection to cover its expenses.

For example, the toll for LPT3 is expected to cost 60 sen per kilometer, amounting to RM70 for the full trip.

The proposed project is currently under review by the Public-Private Cooperation Unit (UKAS) in the Prime Minister's Department.

If approved, the proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet for final consideration.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan also stated that the original plan from 2009 had to be reviewed due to changes in cost estimates and route details over the past 15 years.

In 2020, new groundwork was started to ensure the feasibility of the project in terms of technical and economic aspects, ensuring that it meets modern requirements.

This development promises better connectivity and potential economic growth for the East Coast.
