Tun Daim Zainuddin, the former Finance Minister of Malaysia, is reported to have died this morning at the age of 86 and confirmed by his lawyer, Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar.
According to reports, Tun Daim was admitted to Assunta Hospital, Petaling Jaya a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke which made his health deteriorate. .
Daim served as Finance Minister twice from 1984 to 1991, and again from 1999 to 2001 under the administration of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He contributed a lot to Malaysia with economic reforms and led Malaysia through major economic crises, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
In 2018, he returned to serve as Chairman of the Government Advisory Council to assist the Pakatan Harapan government in economic and national policy reforms.
