The Federal Territories Ministry has made a surprising decision to cancel five of the 12 River of Life (RoL) projects in the Klang Valley, despite almost RM4 billion having been spent.
This decision was taken after the Federal Territories Department (JWP) conducted an in-depth assessment and found that several of the projects did not meet the main objective of this initiative, which is river cleaning and beautification.
According to the Federal Territories Minister, Dr Zaliha Mustafa, only seven projects that are considered truly important will continue to ensure that Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang can be transformed into dynamic, clean, and high-value waterfront areas.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life in the Klang Valley, with a focus on three main components, namely river cleaning, bank beautification, and land development.
However, with almost 90% of the budget having been spent and the National Audit Office report showing that this project is still far from completion, many in the community are beginning to question why a project of this magnitude, involving such a high amount of funds, was not scrutinized more closely before it was approved?
