The government is taking steps to combat extreme poverty in the poorest areas of the country under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced that direct interventions will be focused on the 10 districts with the highest poverty rates, eight of which are in Sabah.
The government will introduce sustainable economic activities to help residents earn their own income and escape the shackles of poverty.
Rafizi stressed that past efforts have often used a one-size-fits-all approach, which has made poverty eradication plans ineffective.
This time, the 13MP will have more targeted plans, focusing specifically on areas in greatest need.
The eight districts in Sabah include Tongod, Beluran, Pitas, Kinabatangan, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Ranau, and Lahad Datu while the other two districts are Pusa in Sarawak and Lojing in Kelantan.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III, Shahelmey Yahya, speaking on behalf of Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, stressed the need for the federal government to improve infrastructure and utilities in the area.
The government aims to lift communities out of poverty by providing the opportunities and support needed to help them succeed.
