A New Chapter in Malaysia-Thailand Relations
Malaysia and Thailand have set a bilateral trade target of USD30 billion by 2027 through the Joint Task Force on Trade and Investment.
Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced the target during an official visit to Malaysia on Monday, with a focus on border connectivity, the digital economy, and tourism as key drivers.
The visit also saw the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the rubber industry, marking new cooperation in the rubber and halal goods sectors.
The two countries also pledged to address common challenges such as floods and improve border infrastructure.
Thaksin as Advisor to Asean 2025
In a move that has been cemented by diplomatic efforts, Anwar has made a surprise decision to appoint former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as an informal advisor to support Malaysia's leadership of Asean in 2025.
Anwar praised Thaksin's wisdom, stressing that the statesman's experience is much needed.
With the MoU signed and plans for infrastructure development and cross-border cooperation, Malaysia and Thailand are now charting a path to prosperity that promises strong economic and regional growth.
