Recently, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his disappointment with Facebook’s parent company, Meta, describing the company as ‘heartless’ after RM432 million was lost to fraud through the platform this year.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Fahmi stated that the loss of RM432 million of Malaysians’ money due to fraud on Facebook was shocking, but Meta acted as if nothing had happened and showed no remorse.
He revealed that 91% of the 170,000 requests to take down fraudulent ads were related to Facebook, making it a major hotbed for cybercriminals.
Fahmi also slammed Meta for its delays in handling complaints, including the case of a fake account selling eye drops that took up to six months to resolve.
Although Meta has the resources and innovation, Fahmi described its actions as absurd.
Their objection to the licensing of social media in January 2025 was considered a “weak excuse.”
The government insists that this licensing is an important step to protect the people from cyber fraud.
However, so far, Meta has not provided any official comment.
