The Public Works Department (JKR) recently announced the department's work to improve the security and infrastructure of various facilities under the Ministry of Home Affairs with 559 projects worth RM5.6 billion currently underway, while some have already been completed.

These initiatives include upgrading state-of-the-art technology in prisons nationwide, as well as efforts to preserve and upgrade existing facilities such as police stations, rehabilitation centres and drug rehabilitation institutions.

Deputy Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, stated that 39 projects are still in the initial phase, while another 41 are under construction.

In addition, 479 projects involving maintenance, rehabilitation, renovation and asset enhancement (PPUN) worth RM280.784 million are also being implemented at various facilities.

One of the main initiatives is the Integrated Electronic Security System (SKEB), which strengthens monitoring at high-risk facilities, including prisons.

The project is being implemented in 18 prisons, involving the installation of state-of-the-art CCTV systems, access control, and communication systems.

Simpang Renggam Prison and Muar Rehabilitation Centre are the latest facilities to receive allocations for these improvements, with an investment of RM23.1 million to enhance security.

With 758 cameras at Simpang Renggam Prison and 106 at Muar Rehabilitation Centre, the upgrades are aimed at preventing escapes and ensuring safer and more secure facilities nationwide.

Nine SKEB projects have been completed, while the rest are expected to be completed by May 2025.
