During a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, US President-elect Donald Trump reportedly suggested to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state if he cannot resolve trade and immigration issues.
This followed Trump’s threat to impose high tariffs on Canadian goods due to concerns over illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Trump, known for his direct approach, warned Trudeau that a 25% tariff would be imposed on all Canadian products if this issue was not addressed before he took office.
Trudeau responded that the tariffs would destroy the Canadian economy.
However, in a half-serious, half-joking tone, Trump suggested to Trudeau that maybe Canada should join the US as a state with Trudeau as its governor, perhaps?
Although the discussions were reportedly conducted in a friendly and productive atmosphere, neither president Trump nor Trudeau commented on the conversation.
Presumably, Trudeau just smiled and shook his head, or perhaps was thinking, “Hmm, the 51st state? "It's okay, it's not okay!"
