In an effort to ease the increasingly challenging financial burden on public transport operators, Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently proposed implementing a special electricity tariff specifically designed for the sector.

The proposal came after seeing the difficulties faced by public transport companies who had to bear the same electricity charges as businesses, which according to Loke, was unsustainable and caused great financial pressure.

In his speech at the 17th CGS International Annual Malaysia Corporate Day, Loke pointed out that electricity costs currently contribute 30% to 35% of operating expenses for operators such as MRT, LRT and Prasarana Berhad, as well as 35% for KTM which also faced the same challenges.

Loke stated that the ministry is currently considering a proposal to provide a special tariff for public transport operators, both public and private, to boost the growth of the sector.

He stressed that the current tariff is too expensive, and this measure can provide much-needed financial relief to ensure the survival and development of the country's public transport.
