After years of being the leading country in artificial intelligence (AI) with the development of giant technology companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and many more.

In January 2025, the technology market changed the game with the emergence of traditional enemy, China in threatening dominance. The aggressive thrust of Donald Trump's administration triggered a push in the market especially in the technology sector.

In early January, the Chinese company launched the DeepSeek-V3 language artificial intelligence model built using a small part of the frontier models of OpenAI, Meta and others.

The achievement of DeepSeek technology has surprised all firms from Silicon Valley to the world.

Chinese companies have created something monumental by introducing an open AI model that rivals US companies.

China's emergence as a strong player in AI comes at a time when US export controls have blocked it from accessing the most advanced Nvidia AI chips.

These controls have also limited the scope of Chinese technology firms to compete with their larger Western counterparts.

The Chinese AI company reportedly spent just $5.6 million to develop the DeepSeek-V3 model, which is a fraction of the millions spent by OpenAI, Google and Microsoft.

DeepSeek is based in HangZhou, China and is headed by entrepreneur Lian Wenfeng, who is also the co-founder of quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer, which is working on AI projects.
