The World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a statement to emphasize that the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus spreading in China is just a seasonal virus that usually infects the respiratory tract.
This statement indirectly refuted rumors about the virus as a new or dangerous threat.
The WHO explained that the spread of respiratory viruses in China is still within the normal range for winter while hospitals are reported to be less crowded than last year, and no emergencies have been reported due to this virus.
HMPV, which was discovered in 2001, usually starts with mild flu symptoms but can pose a serious risk to the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
Although this statement is a relief, in the current post-pandemic world, the continuous increase in cases of this virus should be monitored so that early action can be taken to prepare for a greater possibility.
