Indonesia has now officially joined BRICS, cementing its position as a developing economic power with increasing global influence.
The announcement was made by the Brazilian government on Monday, marking another significant milestone for the country with the world's fourth-largest population.
The strategic move is in line with Indonesia's goal of strengthening cooperation among countries of the Global South, opening up more trade and investment opportunities.
The membership was approved at the 2023 BRICS summit in Johannesburg but was officially sealed after the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto.
Brazil, which will lead BRICS in 2025, said Indonesia's presence reflects a commitment to reforming global governance and expanding economic and political cooperation among developing countries.
With new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, BRICS is increasingly boldly challenging the dominance of Western economic institutions.
Will this membership boost domestic development and solidify Indonesia as a regional economic leader?
